JOB TITLE: Special Population Paraprofessional for the Visually Impaired

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Work closely with one or a few handicapped pupils on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with the physical help and emotional support they need to gain as full benefits from the division's special education program as possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assists the student(s) to whom assigned in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room using the lavatory, and so on.
• Hears the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them.
• Performs simple errands and tasks for student(s) such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, and the like.
• Under supervision of the special education teacher, works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
• Accompanies the student(s) to whom assigned when trips to the office or to the school nurse are necessary.
• Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
• Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
• Responsible for transporting the teacher for the visually impaired.
• Performs necessary tasks as needed in aiding the teacher for the visually impaired in and out of the classroom.
• Fuels provided county car as required, and takes car to transportation department for required preventive maintenance.
• Records mileage, maintains various records, and prepares a variety of reports.
• Successful completes required driver training.
• Provides an annual driving record to transportation.
• Follows all HCPS driver safety guidelines, and reports any car incidents or accidents immediately.
• Follows all motoring laws.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Associates Degree or higher or 48 college credit hours or passing score on Parapro Assessment Test.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license.
• Must have a driving record in good standing.

Salary Range:  $17,350 - $24,715
