JOB TITLE:  Internal Suspension Paraprofessional

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Principal

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Perform intermediate paraprofessional work monitoring the behavior of students assigned to in-school suspension; conducting in-school suspension programs; enforcing established rules and regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor students who have been assigned to in-school suspension.
  • Check attendance daily and report to attendance secretary.
  • Explain expected conduct and achievement.
  • Work with the administration to have in-school serve as an effective preventative disciplinary technique.
  • Assign and check student work during suspension periods; review student progress.
  • Discuss with students appropriate behavior.
  • Monitor and discuss behavior of students with administrators, teachers, and parents.
  • Monitor hallways before and after school.
  • Escort students during break periods and lunch periods.
  • Record and file records on students receiving in-school suspension.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Ensure the safety and health of all students.
  • Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally.
  • Establish a professional rapport with students that earn their respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Some knowledge of practices concerning in-school suspension programs and appropriate methods of dealing with misconduct; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or emergency requiring immediate attention; ability to think and act quickly, effectively and responsibly under emergency situations; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, other employees and officials.

 

Physical Requirements: This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university or completion of 48 credit hours from an accredited college or university or passing score on the Paraprofessional assessment.
